ABOUT ECA Business Energy:
ECA Business Energy is a leading independent energy consultancy committed to helping organisations reduce their energy consumption, carbon footprint, and operational costs. We work with clients across the public and private sectors, delivering practical, data-driven solutions that drive real environmental and financial value. As we grow our Energy Services team, we are seeking a Principal Energy Consultant to deliver ESOS audits and carbon reporting services to its client base.
ROLE OVERVIEW:
This is a client-facing role responsible for delivering Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) assessments, Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) compliance services, and broader carbon and sustainability reporting for ECA’s growing portfolio of clients. The successful candidate will be a lead assessor or working toward lead assessor status, with strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex energy and carbon data clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a client-facing role responsible for delivering Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) assessments, Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) compliance services, and broader carbon and sustainability reporting for ECA’s growing portfolio of clients. The successful candidate will be a lead assessor or working toward lead assessor status, with strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex energy and carbon data clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
ESOS Assessments
- Lead and deliver ESOS Phase assessments for a portfolio of qualifying organisations across multiple sectors
- Conduct energy audits of buildings, transport, and industrial processes in line with ESOS regulations
- Prepare and submit ESOS notifications to the Environment Agency / MESOS portal on behalf of clients
- Identify significant energy consumption areas and produce practical, costed recommendations
- Provide support and recommendations on ESOS annual reporting requirements
Carbon & SECR Reporting
- Prepare Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) disclosures for clients within their annual reports
- Calculate Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions using GHG Protocol methodology
- Support clients with the development of net zero strategies and carbon reduction plans
- Assist in the preparation of TCFD, and other voluntary reporting frameworks
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emission factor updates and regulatory changes
Client Management & Advisory
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, acting as a trusted energy and sustainability advisor
- Prepare high-quality client reports, presentations, and proposals
- Attend client meetings, workshops, and site visits as required across the UK
- Support business development by contributing to tender responses and case studies
Internal Contribution
- Contribute to ECA’s internal knowledge base and quality standards for ESOS and carbon reporting
- Mentor junior consultants and provide technical guidance across the team
- Participate in CPD and remain current with emerging energy and sustainability legislation
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrable experience delivering ESOS site audit assessments, including participation in or leadership of ESOS Phase 1, Phase 2 and/or phase 3
- Strong working knowledge of SECR and GHG Protocol, emission reporting guidelines
- Ability to analyse energy data (consumption, invoices, half-hourly metering) and identify efficiency opportunities
- Excellent report writing skills and able to translate technical findings into clear, accessible language
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel for data analysis; experience with energy management software is advantageous
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for site visits
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & MEMBERSHIPS:
- ESOS Lead Assessor accreditation (or actively working towards) via a recognised professional body
- Chartered or working toward chartership with a relevant institution (e.g. CIBSE, Energy Institute, IEMA)
- Degree or equivalent qualification in physics, environmental science, or related discipline
- ISO 50001 Energy Management System experience
- Familiarity with PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plan requirements for public sector procurement
